It has been on mind a lot lately. I for one would like to know when free speech somehow became sedition. Now Rumsfeld, who sits just left of pure evil, has liken critics of the current Bush administration to Nazis. This is my biggest problem with the Bush administration. More then lying to the public about 9/11, about WMD’s and an exit strategy, more than ignoring the plight of thousands of people languishing in the middle of one of the oldest and most urban cities for days without water, food or help, what really sticks in my craw is absolute entitlement of obedience that Bush and others expect from the American people. If you criticize the administration you may as well be Osama himself, you are, according to Rumsfeld, a fascist.

I would like to know when I fell asleep and missed Bush’s coronation. When did he become divine and not fodder for criticism? How did dissent become unpatriotic? The upside of all of this? I think people are getting pissed. Don’t believe me? Check out Olbermann among others at: http://www.crooksandliars.com/ You may have to scroll down to see the video, but it is well worth it. I have printed out the Edward R Murrow quote that he ends with and pinned it up on my office door, just to remind me everyday that democracy is something that must always be tended to, or it will wither and die.

But this post has been inspired by more than just Rumsfeld and his detractors; the other is, strangely, a chick. I just purchased the new Dixie Chicks CD from itunes and was struck by the song “Not ready to make nice.” In it they sing:

“I made my bed and I sleep like a baby With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’ It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger And how in the world can the words that I said Send somebody so over the edge That they’d write me a letter Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing Or my life will be over I’m not ready to make nice I’m not ready to back down I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go round and round and round It’s too late to make it right I probably wouldn’t if I could ‘Cause I’m mad as hell Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should”

I enjoy this song for a variety of reasons, the least being that I like moxy. I enjoy the FU from the chicks. At a time when I am sure a lot of people are telling them that they should apologize and tow the line, they instead write a song about how they said what they thought and they won’t apologize. Someone said that it was a backhanded apology, I disagree. This is not an apology, it is a shame on you to people who don’t think they should be able to say whatever the hell they think. SO what if they are celebrities, they still have rights, they’re still citizens. This is why I have been enjoying the CD so much, good for you Dixie Chicks, keep up the fight.
